Benedict Mórocz and the Year 1526: A Warrior of Mohács?

Historical research on the family encounters a striking "silence" in archival sources after 1525. The last mention of Benedict dates back to 1520 (in connection with a property pledge at the Bratislava Chapter), while in later documents after 1525, only his sons and daughters are mentioned. What happened during this interim period?

Historical factors confirming participation:

  • Legal Obligation (Insurrectio): As a nobilis (nobleman) from the Bratislava County, Benedict was obliged to enlist in the royal army of Louis II Jagiellon under the threat of losing his property and honor. The Bratislava nobility formed the core of the defense forces of Upper Hungary.
  • Age and Status: Since he was already acting independently in legal matters by 1511, in 1526 he was a man in his prime, likely an experienced noble soldier.
  • Location of Mobilization: Žitný ostrov (Rye Island) was a strategic gathering point for armies heading south. For a family from Veľké Blahovo, it was almost impossible to remain apart from the general mobilization.

Conclusion of research: The absence of mentions of Benedict after 1525—when the Hungarian state administration collapsed and the majority of the middle nobility perished—suggests that Benedict Mórocz highly likely fell or suffered a fatal injury at Mohács. This family tragedy would explain why the property and legal affairs of his children (Stephano, Gregory, Benedicto, and others) begin to reappear in archives en masse only after the stabilization of conditions around 1530.

Early Genealogy of the Mórocz de Nagyabony Family

This family tree was reconstructed based on thorough research of the protocols of the Bratislava Chapter and records from the Hungarian National Archives in Budapest (Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár). The research currently remains open, with the goal of connecting this line to donations from the 12th and 13th centuries. Every new finding will be continuously updated.
